About the role

At BASF | Nunhems, we create innovative seed varieties and smart solutions for tomorrow’s needs. With over 100 years of breeding experience, we combine genetics, data, and global partnerships to deliver vegetables people love — today and for generations to come. To further develop and grow this ambition we are looking for a [[extTitle]].

What they look for

  • You are currently studying at university of applied sciences or university level in Plant Sciences, Plant Breeding, Biology, Agronomy or a related field.
  • You are looking for a research internship where you can combine academic knowledge with practical experience.
  • You have a strong interest in plant breeding, disease resistance and the vegetable seed industry.
  • You enjoy practical work and are comfortable working both in the greenhouse and in the field.
  • You are able to collect, process and interpret research data accurately.
  • You are comfortable communicating in Dutch and/or English.
  • You are preferably available between May and October 2027, or for a significant part of this period.

What you get

  • A research-focused internship with your own project and real responsibility.
  • Guidance and mentoring from experienced specialists in plant breeding and crop research.
  • Plenty of opportunities to apply your academic knowledge in practice.
  • A varied internship combining greenhouse work, field activities and research data.
  • An international, innovative and collaborative working environment.
  • A competitive internship allowance.

About the company

You will become part of the Pickling Cucumber Breeding team at our location in Nunhem. The team brings together colleagues with different areas of expertise who work towards a shared goal: developing successful new vegetable varieties.

During your internship, you will work closely with breeders, pre-breeders and scientists who will share their knowledge and guide you throughout your research project. At the same time, you will have the freedom to work independently, ask questions and bring your own ideas to the table.

You will be working in a practical and international environment where collaboration is key. As a genuine member of the team, you will be involved in different stages of the breeding process, giving you a broad understanding of how research and breeding come together in practice.

Your Internship

Would you like to experience how new vegetable varieties are developed while contributing to research on disease resistance? During this internship at BASF | Nunhems, you will work on your own research project within our Pickling Cucumber Breeding team. You will turn your academic knowledge into hands-on experience and contribute to the development of strong, future-ready vegetable varieties.

This research internship combines practical work in the greenhouse and field with data collection and analysis. You will take ownership of your own project while receiving guidance and support from experienced colleagues throughout your internship.

In this internship, you will:

  • Work on your own interdisciplinary research project focused on disease resistance in pickling cucumber.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues from Breeding, Pre-Breeding and Research.
  • Prepare seeds and support sowing and transplanting activities, both manually and mechanically.
  • Carry out practical greenhouse activities such as pollination, harvesting and seed cleaning.
  • Collect, process and analyze data from greenhouse and field trials.
  • Evaluate plant characteristics through phenotyping and accurately document your observations.
  • Support selection, sampling and plant propagation activities.
  • Discuss your findings with colleagues and contribute ideas for improvements and next steps.

The preferred internship period is May to October 2027.

How do you create impact beyond your expertise?

  • Own it: You take responsibility for your research project, work accurately and follow through on your commitments.
  • Drive it: You show initiative, ask questions and proactively look for answers and opportunities to improve your work.
  • Excel in it: You are curious, open to feedback and eager to use new insights to further develop your knowledge and skills.
  • You build positive working relationships and openly share your observations and findings with colleagues.
  • You are comfortable combining independent research with hands-on teamwork.
  • You adapt when circumstances in the greenhouse, field or research project change.
  • You enjoy getting involved and contributing directly to a shared result.
